The four Type 22 frigates hastily decommissioned in the wake of the controversial 2010 defence review have been sold for scrap for £3 million. Campbeltown, Chatham and Cumberland will be disposed of at the Ministry’s favourite Turkish scrapyard with Cornwall destined for Swansea.
The latter is meant to determine the UK’s capability for safely scrapping such vessels. Meanwhile Leyal’s Aliagia facility has no problems in dealing with warships deemed surplus to requirements. The ship breaker has recently scrapped Ark Royal, Invincible, six Type 42 destroyers and three RFA tankers.
