Portsmouth signs new Defender

The Royal Navy has taken delivery of its fifth and penultimate Type 45 destroyer. HMS Defender arrived at her new homeport for the first time on 25 July.

The ship was later formally ‘accepted off contract’ from BAE Systems at a ceremony which saw the Blue Ensign swapped for the White Ensign. The £1 billion warship is to undergo further sea trials prior to joining the Fleet in March 2013.
