Maiden call for Southampton

Yet another newly-delivered container ship has arrived at Southampton for the first time on a maiden voyage, and this time it’s named after the city. MV APL Southampton (2012/114,000gt) is the Singapore-based American President Line’s largest, most fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly vessel to date.

Completed by Daewoo Shipping and Marine Engineering in South Korea in March, the 10,700-TEU ship is the first of a class of six that are fitted with a ballast water treatment system and an electronically-controlled main engine. The ship is operated by APL, part of the Neptune Orient Line (NOL) group, on the G6 shipping alliance Asia-Europe Loop 4. The rotation links the ports of Ningbo and Shanghai in China directly with Le Havre, Southampton, Hamburg and Rotterdam via Singapore.
