INS Sindhurakshak at Portsmouth

The Indian Navy has paid another visit to Portsmouth with a call by the Project 877EKM (Kilo class) submarine, INS Sindhurakshak. The diesel-electric boat is en route to Mumbai after completing a mid-life overhaul at the Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk, Russia in late January.

The submarine is the seventh of the Indian Navy’s ten-strong Kilo class fleet to be refitted in Russia but the first to be handed back in ice conditions. In August 2008 INS Sinhuvijay also visited the city on her way home from the two-year long refit. The work includes equipping the submarines with a cruise missile capability. INS Sindhurakshak is scheduled to depart on 24 February.
