HMS Illustrious back in from the cold

HMS Illustrious has returned to Portsmouth for repairs after her hull was punctured by a Norwegian harbour tug during a port visit. The incident at Harstad on 9 March left the helicopter carrier with two holes above the waterline.

Although Illustrious remains seaworthy her participation in NATO exercises in the Arctic Circle was curtailed so that permanent repairs could be carried out without impacting on her future programme. She is due to take over from HMS Ocean as the UK’s on-call carrier later this year.
