The Royal Navy’s last operational Type 42 destroyer has completed her final deployment. HMS Edinburgh returned home to Portsmouth after a six-month tour during which time she patrolled the waters off west Africa and South Atlantic, and visited the Caribbean and USA. Edinburgh will conduct a series of farewell calls before decommissioning in June.
In total, 16 Type 42 destroyers were built, including two for the Argentine Navy. The last four Batch 3s were stretched to improve their sea-keeping. Over 38 years the class saw active service in the Falklands, both Gulf Wars, and more recently, off the coast of Libya.
