HMS Edinburgh pays-off

The last of the Royal Navy’s Type 42 destroyers has returned to Portsmouth for the final time. HMS Edinburgh arrived, flying a traditional paying-off pennant, to a 21-gun salute from Fort Blockhouse and a flypast by a vintage Hawker Sea Fury fighter. The 28-year old destroyer was closely followed into harbour by HMS Defender, one of her Type 45 successors.

HMS Edinburgh bowed out with a farewell tour that included visits to London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, the city where she was built, for the 70th anniversary commemorations of the Battle of the Atlantic. She will be decommissioned on 6 June.
