The aptly-named HMS Diamond heralded the start of a weekend of countrywide celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a 21-gun salute as she entered her homeport of Portsmouth. The Type 45 destroyer was escorted by the Bembridge Lifeboat and the Royal Navy training ships HMS Raider and HMS Blazer.
The scene was completed by two Merlin and two Lynx navy helicopters, flying overhead in a diamond formation, and a flypast by an RAF Typhoon. The ship later hosted a traditional ‘street party’ on the flight deck for the ship’s 190 crew and guests. HMS Diamond will depart on her first operational deployment in a few weeks time.
