HMS Dauntless prepares

The Type 45 destroyer has returned to Portsmouth after sea training in preparation for her first operational deployment. The ship will leave for the South Atlantic in late March, almost 30 years to the day that a Royal Navy Task Force sailed to reclaim the Falkland Islands from Argentine invasion.

Although the government has insisted that the dispatch of one of the navy’s most powerful ships is merely a routine changeover it also sends a clear signal that the sovereignty of the islands is not open for discussion. The Argentinian government has been more vocal in its territorial claim since oil exploration began in the island’s waters.
