Cumberland joins ‘ghost fleet’

Yet another decommissioned warship has joined the ranks of those awaiting disposal at Portsmouth. Ex-HMS Cumberland arrived under tow from Devonport to join the ‘ghost fleet’ just as news was emerging that the Ministry of Defence had finally managed to ‘balance its books.’

While the bean counters may be satisfied, the Royal Navy has been left at breaking point after a series of draconian cuts that has left it with too few ships to meet its commitments. Warships laid-up idle in Portsmouth Harbour now include Ark Royal, Campbeltown, Chatham, Cornwall, Cumberland, Manchester, Gloucester, Endurance  and Walney.
