It has… or rather had, one of the most evocative names in Royal Navy history, Ark Royal. Today the former fleet flagship was readied for towing away. Already the worse for wear after years of neglect during lay-up the aircraft carrier was cold moved by tugs to connect up with the tug that will take her to Turkey.
The ocean-going tug, Christos XXIII is expected to begin the long journey to the Leyal Ship Dismantling and Recycling facility in Aliaga on 20 May. The same company was responsible for scrapping the former HMS Invincible in 2011.
